Professor Emeritus Stephen L. Glass reminds us of antiquity's enduring relevance to the present
Stephen L. Glass is a member of ΒιΆΉΤ΄΄βs founding faculty and an emeritus professor of classics who spent his career reminding generations of undergrads that the antique past is far more relevant to the present than we might assume. βI have always thought,β he once told an interviewer, βthat if one has not read Homerβs Iliad, any claim that person might have to having experienced a liberal arts education is short by at least the length of that Iliad.β&²Τ²ϊ²υ±θ;
Today, he and his wife, Sandra, are known for their ongoing support for the humanities (including the annual ΒιΆΉΤ΄΄ lecture series named in their honor). In this early photo by Arthur Dubinsky, Glass is seen discussing Greek mythology with his students and a special guestβnear the door, caught between two students, is James Dickey, former U.S. poet laureate and the Collegeβs first Commencement keynote speaker.
