Resources for Lactating & Breastfeeding Parents

Courtyard of Avery Hall

At Â鶹ԭ´´, we’re committed to fostering a welcoming and supportive environment for all members of our community. We proudly support employees who continue nursing after returning to work and are dedicated to ensuring that all nursing parents have access to the time, space, and privacy they need to express milk during the workday.

If you are a nursing parent and need time during your workday to express milk for your infant, you have the right to:

  • Request reasonable break time for the purpose of expressing milk.
  • Take lactation breaks that run concurrently with your normal break time, when possible.
  • Receive appropriate accommodations in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and California law.

To request access to the Lactation Room, please email us at HR@pitzer.edu. Our HR Team will be happy to provide next steps.

Lactation Room Location

Lactation rooms are private spaces on campus that can be used by breastfeeding or lactating students and employees shielded from the view of co-workers, classmates, and the public.

We want you to feel fully supported when expressing milk on campus. That’s why we provide access to a clean, safe, and private space that’s NOT a bathroom, and located close to your work area.

Our lactation space includes:

  • A comfortable seat
  • A flat surface for your pump and personal items
  • Access to electrical outlets (or alternatives like charging stations)
  • A door that locks or other privacy features to ensure you won’t be interrupted
  • Cleanliness and safety

Additionally, you’ll have access to a sink with running water and a refrigerator nearby for storing milk. If a refrigerator isn’t available in your immediate area, we’ll provide a cooling device to safely store your milk.

Â鶹ԭ´´ understands the necessity of a lactation space for our community. We know you deserve a comfortable and clean space to pump. We are happy to accommodate your needs!

When the lactation room is not available, a space that meets the following minimum requirements will be made available for a nursing parent:

Mirror, chairs, fridge in a small sitting room

  • Private space, shielded from view, with a door that can be locked from the inside
  • A chair and a table to rest the breast pump and supplies
  • An electrical outlet for plugging in a breast pump
  • Close proximity to a sink with hot and cold water

We understand that returning to work while continuing to nurse can come with unique challenges. To help support you on this journey, we’ve compiled a list of helpful resources and support services.
