In 2023, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy sounded the alarm on social disconnection as a widespread public health epidemic, noting that social isolation can increase the risk of premature death by 29%. Loneliness is exacerbated by social determinants such as militarization, gender-based violence, empire building, heteropatriarchy, kidnappings, social surveillance, systemic cruelty, and dehumanization. Against this backdrop, settler colonial scholars have increasingly examined contemplative practices as one promising approach to addressing social isolation. A 2021 study found that extended meditation practices are associated with reduced feelings of loneliness. This participatory session shares findings on  姘 鍔 (Q矛g艒ng)鈥攁 thousands of year old mindful movement practice rooted in traditional Chinese medicine鈥攁s a way to mitigate social disconnection among U.S. college students.
