College Access Experiences

Every semester the CEC, students in the Educational Access pillar and students enrolled in Social Responsibility Praxis (SRX) courses participate in on campus visits with local school aged students. These visits originally started with our partnership with Promise Scholars (OMSD) and have since expanded to other schools outside of the Ontario-Montclair School District (OMSD). These campus tours include:

• Tour of campus
• Panel discussion and Q&A with current students
• Mock lecture/activity with a Â鶹ԭ´´ Faculty

This is a great opportunity for students to engage!  

Homework Club | Pomona Public Library

The Pomona Public Library "Homework Club" provides tutoring resources to students K-6th grade, Monday through Thursdays for all free! Students tutor these school aged students in all types of subjects and do fun activities.

Child, Youth, and Family Collaborative (CYFC)

Â鶹ԭ´´ Students from the Child Development course provide regular tutoring and academic support to foster youth. CYFC encourages students to explore future paths of higher education. Their network of agency-care teams prevents students from changing schools, tracks students’ educational outcomes, and sets students up for a successful transition from the foster system to independent adulthood.

Claremont After School Programs (CLASP)

Â鶹ԭ´´ students in Introduction to Sociology courses and Child Development courses provide tutoring and mentoring for academically at-risk students from Claremont public elementary schools. CLASP’s mission is to help elementary-school children develop their academic, organizational, and social skills by providing homework help, recreation, enrichment activities.

Uncommon Good

Students working with Uncommon Good support the organization’s mission of breaking the intergenerational cycle of poverty by providing tutoring and mentor services. Uncommon Good helps students along their pathway to college by making healthcare services accessible, supporting doctors who bring wellness into underserved communities, and supporting urban farming hunger relief programs.

Popular Education

Each year, the CEC and its partners provide a series of activities aimed at helping students build important skills for dialogue, self-reflection and social change: The Highlander Center for Research , providing information on current events and news in education, unpacking terms and providing educational resources through newsletters, social media, and website, and providing resources on practical skills topics, i.e., how to do your taxes, etc.
